Avira Antivirus Pro Review

PROS: Avira Antivirus Pro has a gamer mode that automatically kicks in while you’re playing games online.

CONS: This program doesn’t have tools specific to safe banking.

VERDICT: Avira Antivirus Pro is good at accurately preventing malware attacks and recognizing the difference between an internet threat and a legitimate website without causing any lag to your computer.

Avira Antivirus Pro is a stronger antivirus than most of the competitors in our review and is compatible with Windows 10, 8 and 7. Avira plugs the holes Windows Defender often leaves open with a strong and proven track record for virus detection and protection in third-party tests and through our own in-house evaluations. This antivirus software performs its scan and blocks without using up too much of your computer resources and creating lag.

Avira scored high in every test we conducted and on third-party tests done by independent antivirus research laboratories. It detected, blocked and eliminated 99 percent of the malware threats used in these tests, including thousands of known viruses, adware, keyloggers and ransomware. It also did this without using much of the computer’s resources, meaning we could easily keep playing games, surfing the web, sending email messages and watching videos online without any interruption or lag. Avira isn’t the easiest program to navigate, with a few extra view windows you need to click through to get to the dashboard.

This software goes beyond antivirus protection to include ransomware protection and antiphishing tools. It scans both USB removable drives and incoming email, so threats are blocked regardless of where they originate. Avira also scans your programs to make sure you have the most current version installed. Having out-of-date software is one of the quickest ways viruses infect computers, and Avira’s vulnerability scan helps cut down on this risk.

One of the best features of Avira, beyond its excellent ability to detect, block and remove malware, is its gamer mode. It automatically detects when you are playing a game, whether online or offline, or watching a video and suspends scheduled scans so there won’t be any lag. It also will not display pop-up notices while gamer mode is on. Once you are finished watching your movie or playing your game, Avira senses you’re through and resumes any suspended scans. You are still protected in real time, so any malware that attempts to piggy-back on a video or game will be blocked by Avira.

If the software comes across a file that it isn’t certain is a real threat, it will place the file in the quarantine folder. This gives you a chance to look it over and determine if it is a safe file. If the file is OK, you can restore it back onto your computer with a quick click. Any files left in quarantine will be automatically and permanently deleted. You can browse Avira’s virus library and compare quarantined files to this and see if it looks like a definite threat.

Avira is one of the few basic antivirus programs that include some parental controls without requiring you to purchase an add-on or a higher-priced program. These tools let you control what your children can see while online by letting you filter content and block access to specific sites.

The biggest tool the software is missing is a safe banking feature. In other programs these often include a safe browser or an on-screen password to help shield user information from keyloggers or other hacker tools that try to swipe your personal information and use it to steal your identity or compromise your accounts. You can use the password manager to help shield your identity as you log into bank and credit card accounts, but they typically aren’t as secure as safe wallets and other password managers specifically designed for online banking.

Avira’s support site includes video tutorials and information about viruses and other sorts of malware. You can email or call 24/7 for help from a customer service agent as well. Avira doesn’t offer live chat support, even though most other companies in our review do. The software does not require a computer restart during installation, which allows it to protect your computer quicker than those that do.

Avira Antivirus Pro is a stronger antivirus program than most of the competitors in our review, and it is compatible with Windows 10, 8 and 7. It’s gamer mode automatically kicks in when you start playing your games or watching videos online. It lacks some safe banking tools, such as a safe browser or on-screen keyboard, but it’s a secure program overall.
